Architectural Memory of Regeneration of Civic Square at Quevedo Project

Complete Project: Regeneration of Civic Square at Quevedo

The square is developed in a triangular space of 1284 m2. 260.43 M2 of which are green areas. The design outlines a 2% inclined platform with a constant slope between the lowest level (located on the tip of the triangle) and the highest level (toward 15th Street).

On the tip’s angle where both streets converge, a bisector which will be the main axis of the square and of the design will be traced, this axis is perpendicular to 15th Street, and it is where the floor grid design starts, and where the center of the monument and agora are located.

The design is a composition of geometric figures, on which some postmodern and classic elements harmoniously meet, creating this way a pegged environment where each piece of furniture has its importance, without competing with the monument, which has a great virtual base that helps to magnify its presence and the base as well. This virtual base is an elliptic platform that emerges from the earth, creating tension. The level differences between the square’s platform and the ellipse are evident since the latter remains horizontal, making it necessary the presence of a step to reach it. The ellipse’s floor finish contrasts with that of the square, in color and texture, for the general floor of the square natural andesite stone was chosen. As floor design and with the purpose of defining axes, and giving scale to the square a 40x40 cm hammered marble tiled macro grid was proposed; both are local production materials. For the floor of the ellipse the hammered marble tiles in rectangular and variable format were chosen.

The square in its back part finishes its hard floor in an arch defined by a wall-seat that bounds with the green areas at 15th Street.

The concept of inclining the square and locating the monument toward the back part is due not only to take maximum advantage of the views of the streets that converge on the tip but also to reinforce the presence of the monument in a virtual way since this is located on the high part of the ramp, which makes it rise in height without being so evident and without having to appeal to the base, which is 70 cm. high with regard to the floor level. The most important consideration to lower the height of the base was the" to humanize" the monument whose character played an important role in social and cultural work.

As complement to the monument, a small water mirror is inside the ellipse, which along with the green area adjacent to this geometric figure, recreate in a nice way their own shadows; We will use this metaphor to create the green area at the commemorative wall. A seat whose exaggerated measures help to highlight the complex surrounds the ellipse.

The urban furniture consists of the agora, the vases and lampposts, the illustrious characters walls, and the pergolas.

The agora in circumference form has a 5.5 m radius and it has 4 blocks of bleachers in 2 levels defined by the floor grid. The purpose of this paraphernalia is to encourage urban art cultural activities, such as outdoor theater, mimes, music etc.

On each line intersection of the pavement design, vases appear as orderly landmarks they hold the lampposts within.

The postmodern characteristic vase contributes to refresh the aridity of the square with small green spaces. The finishing material on these is hammered or polished marble.
The lampposts inside the park maintain a classic concept just to contrast with the contemporary line of the square.

The illustrious characters walls and pergolas, located in the back part, follow the arch form with which the hard floor of the square finishes. Its function inside the context is to frame the monument, granting it a first plane, filtering this way the motley of the facades located on 15th Street. They also serve as support for the metallic pergolas and of wall as commemorative element to illustrious characters born in the City of Quevedo.
The pergolas, located just above the great curved wall-seat at the end of the square, are good to give shade to the place, and they are sustained in the metallic trusses that join each one of the 5 walls giving the image of portico.
